RUST IN PEACE Painting Series

RUST IN PEACE No.15 Size: 36 x 58 Mixed Media on wood. Description: This is the rear view of a 1955 Chevy BelAir, painted in oil over vintage maps of Route 66

Washington DC artist David Mills’ paintings from the most recent series titled “Rust In Peace” are more about the lore and nostalgia of the bygone car culture in America than they are about the automobiles themselves. Each composition is carefully arranged nearly removing everything recognizably “auto” from the canvas. The surfaces are textured, crackled, distressed and appear aged. The artist even employs a metallic paint and acid technique that actually rusts in place. These images are abstractions of not only the cars of a bygone era but an increasingly troubled industry that has seen the consumers confidence, loyalty and trust erode over decades of decline. Each mixed media painting is extremely cropped and abstracted creating a thought-provoking narrative.

RUST IN PEACE No.13 Size: 21.5 x 36 Mixed Media on wood. Description: Tail end of a 1957 Ford Thunderbird. Layered with newspaper articles from the Wall Street Journal chronicling Ford's positive record through the auto bailout program and how they thrived while forgoing taking government funds.

As the bailout money flowed to U.S. industry giants in an attempt to stop economic disaster, one need only to look into their own driveways to see the true reason for the collapse of the auto industry. A complicated amalgam of trade inequities, labor bargaining, governmental regulations, and failed corporate leadership has led to the recent discontinuation of several legendary US brands.

RUST IN PEACE No.14 Size: 21.5 x 36 Mixed Media on wood Description: This is the front emblem from an early model Chevy Truck painted on a rusted surface. The lower portion of the piece will continue to rust as it ages.

The American Automobile

In a country that invented the automobile and the many innovations that followed, it is sad to see the once powerful and pioneering giants being dismantled and crumbling in the same way their progeny lie rusting after years of good service. For decades the American automobile was an integral part of our cultural identity and our economic success. They defined us as a nation of innovators, craftsmen and dreamers. The memories born from them and the babies born or conceived in them are all that are left to tell the stories of a time dubbed by many as “The Good Ole’ Days”.

RUST IN PEACE No.10 Size: 36 x 58 Mixed Media on wood Description: This is the hood ornament from a 1941 Pontiac. The original chrome sculpture was modeled after Chief Pontiac, an Ottowa leader who led an intertribal coalition against the British at Fort Detroit. His sad expression tells of his peoples tragic heritage and alludes to the discontinuation of the Pontiac brand by General Motors in 2010.

RUST IN PEACE No. 7 36 x 58.25 Mixed Media on wood Description: Front emblem from a 1952 Chevrolet Styleline Coupe. The emblem sits atop a replication of an authentic 1952 body color (Birch Gray) as it might look today. Painted on hardwood panel, layered with newspaper, acrylic texture medium, acrylic, oil and metal reactive paint.

ARTIST STATEMENT: I believe in America, I believe that Americans are among the smartest, most talented, most loyal, resourceful and hardest working peoples of this planet. I also fear for America, that we may one day be consumed by our own self indulgent arrogance. I fear that we are doomed to follow the footsteps of similar great nations that Have befallen untimely and unfortunate demise. One such example within the library of lessons passed on to us is the final chapter of the overzealous greed that led to the fall of the roman empire; the historical hub and petri dish of scientific discovery and civilization, the birthplace of the renaissance had but a limited reign.

America needs a wake up call, a proverbial slap in the face. The American ideal and spirit is still very much alive and once awakened from dormancy is insurmountable. For us to regain the power and respect that we so long have tenured, we need to refocus on the very principles and ideals that this nation was built upon. Bruce Springsteen wrote about it, John Cougar sang about it, John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan governed by it; That this nation is deserving of our best. This nation has the natural and intellectual resources to be the greatest nation in the world as well as a beacon of hope and help for all suffering peoples of the world

A call to arms is being issued to keep America working, keep America strong… keep America alive. I paint what I believe America would shout if she had a voice.
